In Eric's second letter, he is writing about cannon launches. The choosen soldiers were often used as oarsmen on the launches. 28 men were placed in every launch. The launches weren't always rowed, they also had a sail. Both in the prow and in the stern a cannon was placed.
If Eric after his time as a sickguard really was placed on a cannon launch is not known, but much information tells that many of his friends were.
