Jonas was born on June 8 1780 on the farm Fernsviken in Nyeds parish, Värmlands county. His parents were Bengt Jonsson and his wife Brita Andersdotter. His father died before 1790 and his mother became a widow. Around 1792 his mother, Jonas and his three brothers Anders, Henric and Lars, moved from the farm Fernsviken. They lived in the house of the "Fireman" Magnus Andersson and his family. By that time Jonas was named "the Nail smith henchman". In September, 1802, he married the maid Britta Svensdotter, from Gunneruds Mill in Alsters parish. The exact date for their wedding is not noted in the church books. Later that year, 1802, he and his wife moved back to Nyeds parish and the farm Fernsviken. The following year, 1803, they once again moved to Gunneruds Mill in Alsters parish. His profession by that time was "Nail smith master". His brother Lars Bengtsson also lived with the family at Gunneruds Mill. He moved on to Älvsbacka parish, Värmlands county, in 1808. His new wife was the maid, Annika Eriksdotter, from the farm Mosserud in Nedre Ulleruds parish, Värmlands county. They had published their banns on October 7, 14 and 21. The wedding took place in Alsters parish. In 1811, Jonas left his job as a nail smith at Gunneruds Mill and the family moved to his new wife's family farm in Mosserud in Nedre Ulleruds parish.
